QR CODES AND URL SHORTENERS

If you’d like a QR Code for your design, I would have once said… ‘WTF why?’

I used to think QR Codes were a bit of a joke, only now with Covid I have used, and see how useful they are (within reason) and even created a few lately, all within Indesign CC.

However, do look out for QR Code scams, sticker overlays, and no need to scan a QR Code online - why would you need to? DON’T, unless for 2 step verification on a secure site, which I’ve read is another topic of debate.

QR Codes a great for long URL’s (or to accompany the URL), example of long URL:

https://www.concretecreative.co.nz/work/pegasus-bay

Admittedly concretecreative.co.nz is bloody long, concrete not available have others, long story.

However QR Codes, have disadvantages. One disadvantage needing a device to scan it, though a URL should be near it - manual entry. Or use a URL shortener. like BITLY, the long URL above becomes…

https://bit.ly/36Akusw

Not very rememberable, though they can track performance. Twitter shortens URLs for Tweets, Bitly, and many others… I’ll leave it to Stacey McLachlan from Hootsuite explain: 12 of the Best Link Shorteners That Aren’t the Google URL Shortener
